‘don’t keep to the rules – break the rules’

There are days when I’m incredibly lucky, yesterday was one of them.

LA College of Creative Arts gave its students the opportunity to attend a seminar hosted by the one and only Karin Darnell, and I was lucky enough to be one of the few to attend. The event was hosted by MAC in Brown Thomas and we were welcomed with champagne and a little gift pack of face-charts and pencil/paper to take notes throughout. Lights, camera, make-up, it doesn’t get much better than that.

For those of you who don’t know, Karin Darnell is a world-renowned makeup artist and has been in the fashion/music industry for more than 20 years.  Rihanna, Jessie J, Spice Girls, Billie Piper and Nicole Scherzinger are just a few names that she has on her client list which says enough about her talent itself. She is sought after by celebrities and people alike and there’s no surprise as to why.

The seminar was incredibly inspirational. The way she transformed one look to another by cleaning up some lines and adding a bit of colour here and there was seamless. It seemed to come to her naturally and her love for colour, the layering and building it up was phenomenal. She never once stopped at a safe look – she dared to push the boundaries and be creative until she found something that worked. She never used a product for its sole purpose – to her makeup is a colour… it can go wherever you want it to go. To me that is how a makeup artist should be, how I aspire to be.

If only one piece of advice was taken from that seminar it was definitely, ‘Don’t keep to the rules, break the rules’. Something we should all play by in the makeup artist industry.
